Jesus Ellias was the leader of the massacre. He and his brother were known as skillful trackers. They were more than willing to kill because their cattle were stolen and two of their brothers were killed.
Lt. Royal Whitman later known as "the most hated man in Arizona" was officer in charge of the Camp Grant post. He had to take responsibility of feeding and taking care of the now peace-making Indians.

Later the Apache people were employed to farming, gathering hay and working in nearby ranches. Eskiminzin was captured and was shipped to prison for incorrigible Native Americans in Flordia. He was considered a prisoner of war so he could not get any sort of trial.
